So Here We Are…

We just got home from a tour of Mainland Europe and, for the first time in a long time, I found myself with a few weeks at home with nothing to do. I’ve had the idea of building a site for all of my art and music projects floating around in the back of my head for some time so, now that I’ve got the time, here we are. I guess I’ll be posting about everything here – music, artwork, other projects, things that seem too self-indulgent for facebook if that’s even possible – and hopefully it’ll also become a regular diary from the road.
Speaking of the road, we just did a short run of shows in Spain, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland. We’ve been making an effort to try to get to the places where we haven’t built up a steady fanbase like the one that we have in Finland. Sometimes it’s hard work but it’s always rewarding when you see how appreciative people are because we’ve traveled to their neck of the woods. And hopefully with a bit of work it’ll become more of a regular occurrence. While we were in Spain this time, we hit up my friend Gere who has a recording studio on the Costa Brava. We had a few days of down time after our show at Calella Rock and so we headed to Gere’s nearby studio to work on some new music. I’ve been writing and demoing a lot in my down time this year (what little I’ve had of it) so we ended up tracking 8 new songs, some of which you’ll hopefully hear on a new record at some point soon. We also got to hang out with Gere’s 18 pigs (yep, eighteen pigs) who lived right outside the front doors of the studio. Being a bunch of animal lovers, we all made quick friends with these little guys, as you can see here.

After Spain it was onwards to Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and then back “home” to Finland. In Copenhagen we discovered that Cheetah Chrome was playing across town on the same night (I’m not sure who’s bright idea it was to have those shows compete when we could have played together but hey…) so after our set, Steve and I jetted across town just in time to catch Cheetah’s show. Man, what a blast it was as well. Cheetah’s playing is unmistakeable and it’s no big stretch to say that he’s had a huge influence on me from all the way back in my Black Halos days. What a blast it was hearing him tear through all of those old classics like Ain’t It Fun, Down In Flames, High Tension Wire and, of course, Sonic Reducer. Cheetah was kind enough to invite us back to hang out after the show and have a chat over a few beers and we traded stories late into the night. I tried to play it cool for the photo as well but I’m not so sure that I pulled it off…

Sadly, that was also the day that I got the news that my old friend (and Sorry & The Sinatras bandmate) Lenny Thomas had passed away after years of battling ill-health. I guess for his friends it was something that was always in the back of our minds but when it happened it was a huge shock for all of us.  When we last toured the US in February I invited Len and his wonderful wife Alison out to our show in Asbury Park and we spent the night trading stories and talking shit like we always used to. I’m grateful that I got to see him one last time before he passed at least, but this one hit me hard. It’s hard losing friends when you’re in the bubble of touring – it almost doesn’t seem real – and it didn’t really sink in until I got home. Gonna miss you Len.

We wrapped up our tour with a private show in Helsinki for winners of a contest on Radio Rock. We’re really fortunate to have some incredibly dedicated fans who follow us around to shows all over the world so I made a point of inviting them all to the show as a thank you for all of their traveling and support. As a result we had a crowd full of familiar faces which made the show a ton of fun. Karl even grew a moustache just for the show!

So then it was back on a plane to Berlin where I found myself with a LOT of time on my hands… and here we are. I’m starting to feel like I’m blabbering on a little so here’s where I say sayonara for now. Besides, I’ve gotta save some stuff for my upcoming posts! See ya soon…
